We(s)t Coast Wilderness.
After the rather alpine region of Otago, we set off for the west coast of the South Island – and the landscape changes completely. Here, everything is bursting with moist, green, lush rainforest. The forest consists of moss-covered deciduous trees and large tree ferns. It’s a temperate rainforest, and accordingly, it rains about four times more per year than in Germany. At the same time, glaciers from the Southern Alps are pushing their way down into the rainforest. It’s not only the rainiest but also the most sparsely populated region of New Zealand that we’ve traveled through. In this episode, we tell about how we coped with the rain, the cheeky keas, and the heart of the west coast from a cyclist’s perspective: the West Coast Wilderness Trail!
