South Korea: The Ideal Transit Country

Published on 09.04.2026, 21:20 in Sokcho, South Korea

This report’s podcast is only available in german: Südkorea: Das perfekte Transitland.

We take the ferry from Japan to Busan in southeastern South Korea. This marks our return to the Asian mainland after nine months, and at the same time, after more than a year of cycling on the left, we’re back to cycling on the right side of the road. That is, if we’re even riding on roads at all — because South Korea is famous among cyclists for its well-developed network of riverside bike paths, which is absolutely unique for an Asian country. The stamp system is even unique worldwide, playfully motivating you to actually ride as many of the available bike paths as possible. This makes South Korea the perfect transit country, as the river bike paths allow you to cross the country extremely efficiently and comfortably; however, we don’t come across much of interest along the way that would make South Korea a worthwhile destination in its own right. And as soon as we leave the bike path network, we have to contend with some rather unpleasant tunnels, which eventually brings us the attention of the police. And so, for us, the highlights of South Korea are on the one hand the pretty pavilions, which make absolutely perfect campsites, and on the other hand the exceptionally pleasant encounter with our fellow bike travelers Dai, as well as Kyra & Michael.

We are going to get on our bicycles once again and further collect kilometers :-)

See you again soon!
