Endless Honking on Lombok and Sumbawa

Published on 07.08.2025, 17:31 in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia

This report’s podcast is only available in german: Huperei auf Lombok und Sumbawa.

The next islands after Java and Bali are Lombok (2 days, 170 km) and Sumbawa (7 days, 500 km). As we cross Lombok from west to east, we notice an astonishing change in the landscape: the tropical, humid green gives way to an almost Mediterranean, dry brown. This is a welcome change, as it makes camping a little less complicated. In addition, the quality of the roads improves and the traffic density decreases, which does, however, not spare our ears: on some sections, over 80% of vehicles honk their nerve-wracking horns into our ears, denying us the pleasant cycling experience that seems within reach. In this episode, we also discuss whether all people everywhere are really as great as many travel influencers would have us believe, and whether hospitality is actually an Islam-thing.

We are going to get on our bicycles once again and further collect kilometers :-)

See you again soon!
