Unlike originally planned, we now avoid the mountains in southeastern Bulgaria and prefer to race with a tailwind through the Upper Thracian Plain directly into Turkey. After a rather exhausting day in Edirne, we ride on a road that is confusingly similar to a highway to Lüleburgaz. There we are welcomed by İnanç in the communal “Bicycle Academy”, where touring cyclists are allowed to stay for free. In fact, we even meet Matteo and Clarke again here, whom we had already met in Shkodra. Afterwards, we try our swimming luck at the Black Sea and accept the challenge of riding into the 16 million metropolis Istanbul; as it should turn out, we probably don’t choose the best way.
